Bol tested positive for synthetic erythropoietin, a performance-enhancing drug.

According to reports from January-March 2023, Tokyo 2020 star and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Bol tested positive for this substance. Erythropoietin, often abbreviated as EPO, is a peptide hormone naturally produced by the kidneys that stimulates red blood cell production in the bone marrow. Synthetic erythropoietin is a manufactured version of this hormone and is used, illegally in sports, to enhance athletic performance by increasing oxygen delivery to muscles.
