How do I mask a frame in Photoshop?

Published in Photoshop 1 min read

To mask a frame in Photoshop using a clipping mask, you'll essentially clip one layer inside another. Here's how:

  1. Arrange Layers: Ensure the layer you want to clip (the image to be masked) is directly above the layer that will act as the mask (the frame shape) in the Layers panel.
  2. Create Clipping Mask: Select the top layer (the image layer). Then, either right-click on the layer and choose "Create Clipping Mask," or go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask. Alternatively, hold down the Alt (Option) key and click between the two layers in the Layers panel; you'll see the mouse change to two overlapping circles before you click.
  3. Adjust Position (if needed): The image layer will now be clipped inside the layer below. You can move the image layer around to adjust its position within the frame.

For example, if you have an image of a person and a heart shape below it, creating a clipping mask will show the person's image only within the boundaries of the heart.
