What are antipodals?

Published in Plant Biology 1 min read

Antipodals are, in most angiosperms, any of the three haploid cells grouped at the end of the embryo sac farthest from the micropyle. They are also called antipodal cells.

In simpler terms, antipodals are a group of cells found in the embryo sac of flowering plants.

  • They are located opposite the opening (micropyle) where the pollen tube enters.
  • There are typically three of these cells.
  • They possess a single set of chromosomes (haploid).
