How Do You Cut Plant Trimmings?

Published in Plant Propagation 1 min read

To properly cut plant trimmings for propagation, follow these steps to ensure successful rooting:

  • Make the Bottom Cut: Cut the stem just below a node. A node is the point on the stem where a leaf, bud, or another stem grows. This is crucial for root development.

  • Remove Excess Leaves: Remove approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the leaves from the bottom portion of the cutting. This reduces water loss and focuses the plant's energy on root growth. If the remaining leaves are large, cut them in half to further minimize water loss.

  • Remove Flowers and Buds: Ensure you remove any flowers, flower buds, or fruit from the cutting. These structures consume energy that should be directed towards root formation.

By following these steps, you increase the chances of your plant trimmings successfully developing into new plants.
