To fix a radiator air valve, you generally need to replace it. Here's how:
-
Turn Off and Cool Down: Make absolutely certain the boiler is turned off and that the radiator is completely cool to prevent burns.
-
Remove the Old Valve: Locate the old air valve, typically on the side of the radiator near the top. Using your hand or a wrench (if needed), turn the valve counter-clockwise to unscrew it. Look directly at the valve while unscrewing it to ensure proper removal.
-
Install the New Valve: Obtain a replacement air valve that is the correct size and type for your radiator. Screw the new valve into the radiator's threaded hole clockwise until it's firmly in place. Make sure the small vent hole (or the adjustable knob, depending on the valve type) of the air valve is facing upwards. This allows air to escape properly.
-
Turn Boiler Back On: Once the new valve is securely installed, you can turn your boiler system back on.
