Pool pH refers to the potential of hydrogen in your swimming pool water. It's a measurement on a scale of 0 to 14, indicating how acidic or alkaline the water is. A pH of 7 is neutral. A pH below 7 indicates acidity, while a pH above 7 indicates alkalinity (or basicity).

Ideal Pool pH Range

The ideal pool pH level for a comfortable and safe swimming experience is generally considered to be between 7.4 and 7.8. Maintaining this range is crucial for several reasons:

  • Comfort: Water outside this range can irritate skin and eyes.
  • Sanitizer Effectiveness: Chlorine and other sanitizers work most effectively within the ideal pH range.
  • Equipment Protection: Extreme pH levels can damage pool equipment over time.

Some sources suggest a slightly narrower ideal range of 7.4 to 7.6 for optimal comfort. However, a slightly wider range of 7.2 to 7.8 is generally acceptable and still considered safe.

Factors Affecting Pool pH

Several factors can influence your pool's pH level, including:

  • Rainfall: Rainwater can lower the pH.
  • Bathers: Swimmers introduce body oils and other substances that can affect pH.
  • Chemicals: Added chemicals, like chlorine and pH adjusting chemicals, directly impact pH levels.

Adjusting Pool pH

If your pool's pH is outside the ideal range, you'll need to adjust it using appropriate chemicals:

  • To lower pH (if above 7.8): Add an acid, such as muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate. Always add acid slowly and carefully, following product instructions.
  • To raise pH (if below 7.2): Add an alkaline increaser, such as sodium carbonate (soda ash). Always follow product instructions carefully.

Regular testing and adjustment are key to maintaining a healthy and enjoyable swimming pool.
