What is de filter powder?

Published in Pool Filtration 2 mins read

DE filter powder is a filter media made from diatomaceous earth, used to enhance the filtration process in swimming pools, spas, and other applications.

Understanding DE Filter Powder

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a naturally occurring, fossilized skeletal remains of diatoms (a type of hard-shelled algae). This material is mined, processed, and sold as a fine powder. This powder is then used as a filtration medium due to its unique properties.

How DE Filter Powder Works

DE filter powder works by creating a very fine filter cake on grids or septa within a DE filter. Water is forced through this cake, trapping extremely small particles, much smaller than sand or cartridge filters can capture. In fact, DE filters can trap particles as small as 3-5 microns.

Benefits of Using DE Filter Powder

  • Superior Filtration: Removes finer particles compared to sand or cartridge filters, resulting in clearer water.
  • High Flow Rate: Allows for efficient water circulation.
  • Effective Removal of Algae and Bacteria: Traps many microorganisms.
  • Relatively Low Maintenance: Once the filter is initially charged, only periodic backwashing or cleaning is required.

Using DE Filter Powder in Pool Filters

The powder is added directly into the pool skimmer while the pump is running. The powder coats the filter grids, creating a highly effective filtering surface. Over time, the DE filter cake becomes clogged with debris. The filter must then be backwashed to remove the accumulated dirt. After backwashing, more DE filter powder must be added to recharge the filter.

Types of DE Filter Powder

There are different grades and types of DE filter powder available, usually differentiated by particle size and intended application. It's essential to use the correct type and amount recommended by the filter manufacturer.

Safety Precautions

  • Inhalation: Avoid inhaling DE filter powder, as it can cause respiratory irritation. Use a dust mask when handling the powder.
  • Eye Contact: Avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, flush thoroughly with water.

Alternative Filter Media

While DE is a popular option, alternative filter media exists, including sand filters and cartridge filters. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the specific application.
