How can I make my pool level?

Published in Pool Maintenance 2 mins read

To level your pool, the best approach depends on whether it's an above-ground pool that's already filled or one that hasn't been assembled yet.

If your above-ground pool is already filled:

The safest and most reliable method is to completely drain the pool, disassemble it, and reassemble it on a properly leveled surface. Trying to level a filled above-ground pool poses a significant risk of pool collapse and potential property damage.

If your above-ground pool is not yet assembled:

  1. Prepare the ground: The most important step is to ensure the ground where you plan to set up the pool is as level as possible before you begin assembling the pool. You can do this by:

    • Removing sod and vegetation: Clear the area of all grass, weeds, and other organic matter.
    • Leveling the ground: Use a shovel, rake, and level to even out any bumps or depressions. A laser level can be very helpful for larger areas. Aim for as close to perfectly level as possible.
    • Compacting the soil: Use a hand tamper or plate compactor to compact the soil. This prevents settling later on.
  2. Consider a Base Material: Adding a layer of material under the pool liner improves the leveling and protects the liner itself. Consider these options:

    • Sand: A layer of sand (about 2-3 inches thick) can provide a smooth, level surface. However, it's prone to washing away.
    • Pool Pad: A pre-made pool pad is a more durable option. It provides cushioning and helps distribute the weight of the water evenly.
    • Foam Insulation: Rigid foam insulation board can also create a smooth, protective base.
  3. Leveling the Pool Supports (If Necessary): After the pool is partially assembled, you may find some supports are slightly lower than others. You can adjust these by:

    • Using Pavers: Carefully lift each support (one at a time!) and place a paver underneath it to raise it to the correct height. This method is best for minor adjustments.

Why is Leveling Important?

  • Safety: An unlevel pool can put undue stress on one side, increasing the risk of collapse.
  • Water Depth: Unevenness leads to varying water depths, which is annoying for swimmers.
  • Aesthetics: A tilted pool just looks bad.

In summary, leveling is crucial for the safety and longevity of your above-ground pool. For an existing, filled pool, draining and reassembling is the safest method. For new pools, careful ground preparation is key.
