How to Operate Pool Pump Valves?

Published in Pool Maintenance 3 mins read

Operating pool pump valves involves adjusting them to control the flow of water from different sources (like skimmers and main drains) to your pool pump and then back to the pool. Here's how it generally works:

  • Identifying the Valves: Locate the valves connected to your pool pump. You'll typically find valves for the skimmer line(s), the main drain line, and the return line. Sometimes there are also valves for other features, such as a spa.

  • Understanding Valve Positions: Most pool valves are either two-way or three-way valves.

    • Two-way valves: These simply open or close a line. When the handle is aligned with the pipe, the valve is open, allowing water flow. When the handle is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve is closed, blocking water flow.
    • Three-way valves: These valves direct the flow of water between two different sources or destinations. The handle indicates which direction is blocked. For instance, if the handle points towards the skimmer line, the water will be drawn from the main drain.
  • Adjusting Valves for Skimmer and Main Drain:

    • To pull water only from the skimmer: Shut off the main drain line by positioning the handle of the main drain valve perpendicular to the pipe (for a two-way valve) or pointing at the main drain line with a three-way valve. This forces the pump to draw water only from the skimmer.
    • To pull water only from the main drain: Shut off the skimmer line by positioning the handle of the skimmer valve perpendicular to the pipe (for a two-way valve) or pointing at the skimmer line with a three-way valve. This forces the pump to draw water only from the main drain.
    • To pull water from both the skimmer and main drain: Partially open both the skimmer and main drain valves. You can adjust the ratio of water drawn from each source by adjusting the valve positions. This allows you to fine-tune the suction from each location. Usually, you want to draw the majority of the water from the skimmer.
  • Adjusting Valves for Cleaning and Maintenance: During pool cleaning, such as vacuuming, you might adjust the valve positions to maximize suction through the skimmer or the dedicated vacuum line.

  • Important Considerations:

    • Never completely close off all suction lines: This can damage your pump as it can create a vacuum and lead to pump cavitation.
    • Slowly adjust valves: Rapidly changing valve positions can create pressure surges in your plumbing.
    • Label your valves: Use labels to clearly identify which valve controls which line. This will prevent confusion and errors.
    • Consult your pool equipment manual: Specific instructions for your particular pool system may vary.

By understanding how your pool pump valves work, you can optimize water flow, improve filtration, and maintain a clean and healthy pool.
