How Do You Add Water to Popcorn?

Published in Popcorn Preparation 2 mins read

Adding water to popcorn, surprisingly, isn't about making popcorn. It's a technique to rehydrate old, dry popcorn kernels so they pop better. Here's how you do it:

Steps to Rehydrate Popcorn Kernels

  1. Prepare a Jar or Container: Choose a jar or container with a lid. The size depends on how much popcorn you want to rehydrate.
  2. Add Popcorn Kernels: Fill the jar with the dry popcorn kernels.
  3. Add Water: Add approximately 1 tablespoon of water per cup of popcorn kernels. This is a general guideline; you might need slightly more or less depending on the dryness of the kernels.
  4. Seal and Shake: Secure the lid tightly onto the jar and shake it well for a few seconds to distribute the water evenly.
  5. Shake Periodically: Over the next few minutes, shake the jar every few minutes to ensure even water absorption.
  6. Observe and Adjust: The goal is for the kernels to absorb all the water. If water remains after a few minutes, that's okay. If it seems too dry, add a tiny bit more water (a few drops at a time), shaking after each addition.
  7. Store: Store the sealed jar in a cool, dark place for 2-3 days. This allows the water to fully penetrate the kernels.

Why This Works

Popcorn kernels need a certain moisture content to pop properly. As they age, they can dry out, resulting in fewer popped kernels and more "old maids" (unpopped kernels). Adding a small amount of water helps restore the optimal moisture level.

Important Considerations

  • Don't Overdo It: Adding too much water will make the kernels moldy. It's better to start with less water and add more if needed.
  • Storage is Key: Proper storage after rehydration is crucial. If you don't use the popcorn within a reasonable time, it may dry out again or become moldy.
  • Effectiveness Varies: This method doesn't always work perfectly, especially with very old or severely dried-out popcorn.
