What is PPP Rash?

Published in Pregnancy Rash 2 mins read

PPP rash refers to Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy (PUPPP), an itchy rash that occurs during pregnancy.

Understanding PUPPP

PUPPP rash, more descriptively known as pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy, is a common dermatological condition specifically associated with pregnancy. It's characterized by:

  • Pruritic: Intense itching.
  • Urticarial: Resembling hives.
  • Papules: Small, raised bumps.
  • Plaques: Larger, raised patches of skin.

Symptoms and Appearance

Typically, the rash:

  • Begins within the stretch marks on the abdomen.
  • Consists of small, raised bumps (papules) that may merge into larger, flat patches (plaques).
  • Spreads to other areas of the body, such as the thighs, buttocks, and arms, but usually spares the face.
  • Causes intense itching, which can be quite uncomfortable.

Cause

The exact cause of PUPPP is unknown, but it is thought to be related to the stretching of the skin during pregnancy, particularly with multiple pregnancies or larger babies.

Treatment

Treatment focuses on relieving the itching and discomfort. Common treatments include:

  • Topical corticosteroids: Creams or ointments to reduce inflammation and itching.
  • Oral antihistamines: Medications to help alleviate itching.
  • Cool compresses: To soothe the skin.
  • Emollients (moisturizers): To keep the skin hydrated.

Prognosis

PUPPP rash typically resolves within a few weeks after delivery and poses no long-term health risks to the mother or baby.
