How Do You Prime a Drill Water Pump?

Published in Pump Maintenance 1 min read

To prime a drill water pump, you'll need to introduce water into the pump housing to create suction. Here's how:

  • Add Lubricant: Place a few drops of light lubricating oil into the inlet side of the pump.

  • Fill with Water: Fill the pump with water from the outlet side. The pump needs to be completely full of water to function.

  • Operate the Drill: Attach the pump to your drill and operate it. The pump will not work unless fully primed.

Priming is essential because drill water pumps, like many pumps, rely on creating a vacuum to draw water. If there's air inside the pump, it can't create that vacuum. The water you add displaces the air, allowing the pump to start drawing water. Adding a few drops of lubricating oil to the inlet also aids in smooth operation and longer pump life.
