Which Surah has no Bismillah?

Published in Quranic Studies 2 mins read

The Surah that has no Bismillah is Surah At-Tawbah, also known as Surah Baraat. It is unique among the 114 chapters of the Quran for not beginning with the customary "Bismillah Al-rahman Al-rahim."

Understanding Bismillah

The phrase "Bismillah Al-rahman Al-rahim" translates to "In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful." This powerful invocation serves as the opening verse for 113 of the 114 Surahs in the Quran. It is a fundamental declaration that signifies starting any action, text, or endeavor with the remembrance of Allah's mercy and blessings. Muslims typically recite it before undertaking any task, whether mundane or significant, to seek divine assistance and express gratitude.

The Uniqueness of Surah At-Tawbah (Baraat)

Surah At-Tawbah stands out because it begins directly with its content, without the preceding "Bismillah Al-rahman Al-rahim." There are several widely accepted scholarly explanations for this distinct characteristic:

  • Declaration of Disassociation: Surah At-Tawbah primarily deals with a declaration of disassociation from idolaters and treacherous treaties, as well as instructions regarding warfare and the hypocrites. Its themes are often perceived as stern and severe, contrasting sharply with the mercy and benevolence conveyed by the Bismillah. It is seen as a divine command to take a firm stance against enemies of faith, rather than a message of general mercy at its onset.
  • Continuation of the Previous Surah: Some scholars suggest that Surah At-Tawbah is effectively a continuation or supplement to the preceding Surah, Al-Anfal. If viewed as one extended Surah, then the Bismillah at the beginning of Al-Anfal would suffice for both. This perspective considers them as two parts of a single theme or narrative.
  • Revelation Context: It is believed that the Bismillah was not revealed at the beginning of this particular Surah by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Companions compiled the Quran exactly as it was revealed and instructed by the Prophet, and thus, if the Bismillah was not part of the initial revelation of Surah At-Tawbah, it was not included.

This absence makes Surah At-Tawbah a distinct chapter within the Quran, signaling its unique message and context right from its opening.
