What to Apply to Rashes?

Published in Rash Treatment 2 mins read

Applying the right treatment depends on the type and cause of the rash. However, several common approaches provide relief and promote healing.

General Rash Treatment

For many rashes, a gentle approach is best. Start with a mild cleanser like Dove® in the shower. Follow this with a moisturizer, such as a cream, oil, or petroleum-based product like Aquaphor® Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment. Apply the moisturizer twice a day, ideally after showering, for at least 4-5 days. This helps soothe irritated skin and create a barrier against further irritation.

  • Cleanser: Dove® (or similar gentle cleanser)
  • Moisturizer: Aquaphor® Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment (or similar cream, oil, or petroleum-based product)
  • Application: Twice daily, preferably after showering, for at least 4-5 days.

Specific Rash Considerations

While the above provides general guidance, some rashes require specific treatments. For example, diaper rash often responds well to creams, pastes, or ointments. If a rash doesn't improve within a few days, or if it worsens, it is crucial to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. This is especially important for rashes accompanied by fever, blistering, or significant pain.

  • Diaper Rash: Creams, pastes, or ointments are often effective. Persistent diaper rash may indicate infection and needs medical attention.
  • Poison Ivy/Oak/Sumac: Thoroughly wash any affected area and clothing immediately after exposure. Medical treatment might be necessary depending on the severity.
  • Eczema: Treatment focuses on dryness, itching, inflammation, and infection prevention. A doctor can recommend specific creams and ointments to manage eczema.
  • Other Rashes: Many rashes stem from underlying skin conditions like eczema, granuloma annulare, lichen planus, and pityriasis rosea. A doctor can diagnose and treat the specific condition causing the rash.

Remember, this information is for general knowledge and shouldn't replace professional medical advice. Always consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment of any persistent or severe rash.
