What are the 7 ribs?

Published in Ribs 1 min read

The 7 ribs are also known as true ribs. These ribs directly connect to the sternum, the breastbone, via their costal cartilages. The costal cartilages are flexible connective tissues that allow for some movement of the rib cage.

The remaining ribs are classified as false ribs (ribs 8-12) or floating ribs (ribs 11-12). False ribs attach to the costal cartilages of the ribs above them, while floating ribs do not attach to the sternum or other ribs at all.

Here is a breakdown of the different types of ribs:

  • True Ribs (1-7): These ribs attach directly to the sternum via their costal cartilages.
  • False Ribs (8-10): These ribs attach to the costal cartilages of the ribs above them, indirectly connecting to the sternum.
  • Floating Ribs (11-12): These ribs do not attach to the sternum or other ribs. They end in the abdominal musculature.
