What is bad for scars?

Published in Scar Healing 1 min read

Several things can negatively impact scar healing and appearance, including:

  • Sunlight exposure: Scars are often more sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, especially in the first year after injury. Excessive sun exposure can worsen inflammation, lead to altered pigmentation, and make the scar more prominent.
  • Picking or scratching: Picking or scratching at a scar can irritate it, delay healing, and increase the risk of infection. It can also lead to the development of hypertrophic scars or keloids.
  • Infection: Infected wounds are more likely to scar, and infections can also worsen existing scars.
  • Certain medications: Some medications, like steroids, can interfere with wound healing and increase the risk of scarring.
  • Smoking: Smoking hinders the body's ability to heal, increasing the chances of developing thicker, raised scars.

It's important to keep scars clean, moisturized, and protected from sun exposure. Avoid picking or scratching, and see a doctor if you have any concerns about scarring.
