How do we smell for kids?

Published in Sense of Smell 1 min read

We smell because tiny scent particles float into our noses!

How Our Nose Works

When something has a smell, like a yummy cookie or a flower, it sends out tiny pieces called scent molecules. These molecules travel through the air and enter your nose.

Catching the Scent

  • Inside your nose, there are tiny hairs called cilia at the back.
  • These cilia catch the scent molecules.
  • Once caught, our body recognizes and understands what we are smelling!

Smell and Memories

Smell is a powerful sense connected to our memories. This means that the scent of your grandma's cookies might bring back happy memories!

In simple terms, we smell because our nose has tiny hair-like structures that grab the little pieces of things that create smells, helping us understand what we're experiencing.
