How Do You Sew On a Patch?

Published in Sewing Patches 2 mins read

Sewing on a patch involves carefully attaching it to fabric using a needle and thread, ideally employing a slip stitch to make the stitches nearly invisible.

Here's a step-by-step guide to sewing on a patch:

  1. Prepare Your Materials: Gather your patch, the garment or fabric you're attaching it to, a needle, thread that matches the patch's border, scissors, and pins.
  2. Position the Patch: Place the patch where you want it on the fabric. Use pins to hold it in place. Be sure the patch is straight and properly aligned.
  3. Thread the Needle: Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread.
  4. Begin Sewing:
    • Bring the needle up from the back of the fabric, right along the edge of the patch. The knot should be hidden between the patch and the fabric.
    • Make a small stitch in the patch's edge, catching only the very edge of the patch.
    • Then, make a small stitch in the garment fabric right next to where the thread came up from the back.
    • Repeat these steps, working your way around the entire patch. The goal is for the stitches to fall in line with the edge stitching of the patch so they disappear. Come up a few millimeters along from your first stitch and repeat, turning the fabric as needed. This technique is known as a slip stitch.
  5. Maintain Consistent Stitching: Keep your stitches small, even, and close together for a secure and neat finish.
  6. Secure the Thread: Once you've sewn all the way around the patch, make a small knot on the back side of the fabric. Weave the needle through a few of your stitches on the back to further secure the thread, then trim the excess thread.

By using this method, you can securely attach a patch to your garment or fabric while keeping the stitches discreet.
