How do I get my CSN number?

Published in Share Trading 2 mins read

Your CSN (Client Shareholder Number) is essential for managing your shareholdings. You can typically find an existing CSN on your financial statements, or a new one can be arranged when you open a trading account.

Understanding Your CSN

A CSN stands for Client Shareholder Number. It is a unique identifier used in New Zealand for share trading, connecting you as an investor to your shareholdings registered with a New Zealand share registry.

Locating an Existing CSN

If you already own shares, your CSN will be readily available on your official shareholding documents.

  • You'll find your CSN prominently displayed on the right-hand corner of any Statement of Holdings that has been issued to you by a NZ share registry. This statement provides a summary of the shares you own.

Obtaining a New CSN

If you are new to share trading and do not currently have a CSN, the process for obtaining one is generally straightforward and often handled by your brokerage firm when you apply for a trading account.

  • When completing an application for a share trading account, if you don't already have a CSN, you can typically leave the designated CSN field blank.
  • For example, if you are applying with ASB Securities, leaving the CSN space blank in your application means that ASB Securities will apply for one on your behalf as part of your account setup process.
