What is the Infraspinatus Muscle?

Published in Shoulder Muscle 1 min read

The infraspinatus is a significant muscle located in your shoulder, playing a crucial role in its movement and stability.

Anatomy and Function

The infraspinatus is a thick, triangular muscle situated in the infraspinous fossa of the scapula (shoulder blade). As part of the rotator cuff muscle group—often remembered by the acronym "SITS" (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis)—it contributes significantly to shoulder joint stability and movement. Its primary function is external rotation of the shoulder. This means it helps you turn your arm outwards, away from your body.

  • Location: Infraspinous fossa of the scapula.
  • Function: External rotation of the shoulder.
  • Rotator Cuff Member: Part of the SITS muscle group.

Clinical Significance

Injury to the infraspinatus, often through overuse or trauma, can lead to pain, weakness, and reduced range of motion in the shoulder. This can significantly impact daily activities requiring shoulder movement. Infraspinatus tears are a common rotator cuff injury.
