How to Get on Ski Lifts?

Published in Skiing Basics 2 mins read

Getting on a ski lift safely and smoothly is a crucial part of enjoying your time on the slopes. Here's a breakdown of the process:

Approaching the Lift

  • Prepare: As you approach the loading area, ensure your skis are pointed forward and you're moving at a controlled pace. A slight "V" shape with your skis can help.
  • Observe: Pay attention to the lift attendant's instructions and the movement of the chair.
  • Get Ready: Remove your pole straps from your wrists and hold your poles in one hand. This frees up your other hand to grab the chair.

Loading the Lift

  • Position Yourself: As the chair approaches, move into the designated loading area.
  • Timing: Watch for the chair to come around and gently sit down as it arrives. If there's a painted line on the ground, aim to be on it when the chair hits you.
  • Sit Back: Sit all the way back in the chair, making sure your skis are resting flat on the footrest, and your poles are out of the way.
  • Lower the Safety Bar: Once everyone is seated, lower the safety bar (if available) for added security and comfort.

After Getting On

  • Relax and Enjoy: Keep your skis resting on the footrest and enjoy the ride up the mountain.
  • Be Aware: Pay attention to the scenery, but also be aware of your surroundings and other skiers/snowboarders.
  • Prepare to Unload: As you approach the unloading area, raise the safety bar in preparation.

Slowing Down and Turning

  • Bow: Use a small bow to slow down.
  • Turn: Make a turn to slow down.
  • Check: Always check around you.

It's important to remember that different ski lifts may have slightly different loading procedures. Always pay attention to the instructions provided by the lift attendants and follow any posted signage.
