Thick skin is found on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. This type of skin has a fifth layer called the stratum lucidum, which is located between the stratum granulosum and stratum corneum. This extra layer contributes to the thicker nature of the skin in these areas.
The palms and soles of the feet are subjected to a lot of wear and tear, so they need a thicker layer of skin to protect them from abrasion. This thicker skin also contains more sweat glands, which help to keep the skin cool and moist.
