What pH is Skin?

Published in Skincare 1 min read

The optimal pH of skin on most of the face and body is between 4.7 and 5.75. This means that skin is naturally slightly acidic. A pH of 7 is considered neutral, like pure water.

Maintaining a healthy skin pH is important for several reasons:

  • Fighting microbes: An acidic pH helps to protect the skin from harmful microbes and bacteria that can cause infections.
  • Preventing inflammation: A balanced pH helps to reduce inflammation and irritation.
  • Protecting against free radicals: The skin's acidic environment helps to combat damaging free radicals that can contribute to aging.

When the skin's pH becomes too alkaline or overly acidic, it can lead to issues like acne, dryness, and irritation. Using gentle cleansers and pH-balanced skincare products can help to maintain the skin's natural pH balance.
