How to Add Paint 3D to "Open With"?

Published in Software Configuration 2 mins read

To add Paint 3D to the "Open With" context menu for specific file types, you'll need to modify the file association settings on your Windows computer. Here's how you can do it:

Steps:

  1. Select Properties: Right-click on a file of the type you want to open with Paint 3D (e.g., a .jpg or .png image) and choose "Properties" from the context menu.

  2. Change the Default Program: In the Properties window, look for the "Opens with:" section. Click the "Change" button next to it.

  3. Manually Find Paint 3D:

    • A window will appear listing suggested apps. If Paint 3D is already listed, select it and click "OK".
    • If Paint 3D is not listed, click "More apps". If it's still not there, scroll to the bottom of the list and click "Look for another app on this PC."
  4. Browse to Paint 3D's Executable: Navigate to the Paint 3D executable file. The default location is typically:

    C:\Program Files\WindowsApps

Important: The WindowsApps folder is usually hidden. You might need to enable "Show hidden files and folders" in File Explorer's View settings. Also, accessing the WindowsApps folder may require you to take ownership of it. This involves changing the folder's permissions. Be cautious when doing this, as incorrect permission changes can cause system issues. You can find instructions on how to take ownership of a folder online.

Inside WindowsApps, look for a folder named something like Microsoft.MSPaint_xxxxxxxxxxxxx (the xxxxxxxxxxxxx part will be a unique identifier).

Open that folder, and then look for the Paint 3D executable file, which might be named mspaint.exe or similar. Select the executable and click "Open."

  5. Confirm Changes: After selecting the Paint 3D executable, the "Opens with:" setting in the file's Properties window should now show Paint 3D. Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.

Now, when you right-click on a file of that type, Paint 3D should appear in the "Open With" menu.
