Where does eye black go?

Published in Sports Equipment 1 min read

Eye black goes on the cheekbones, right below the eyes. Think of it as applying something similar to lip balm on your cheeks, creating a dark stripe.

Here's a breakdown of how and why it's applied:

  • Purpose: Eye black is used to reduce glare from the sun or stadium lights, enhancing visual acuity on the field. By absorbing light, it minimizes the amount of light that reflects into the athlete's eyes.
  • Placement: Start at the outside of your cheekbone, directly beneath your eye socket. Draw a line across your cheek, ending near the bridge of your nose. Some athletes apply multiple stripes or different designs.
  • Application: Eye black is available in stick or grease form, making application easy. The stick form is similar to a chapstick applicator.

In essence, the dark stripe across the cheekbones absorbs and deflects light, thus minimizing glare, which helps athletes see better.
