Swimming can be associated with delayed or absent menstrual periods in some individuals. According to research, a notable percentage of swimmers experience menstrual irregularities.

The Impact of Swimming on Menstrual Cycles

A study revealed that a significant portion of swimmers reported disruptions to their menstrual cycles:

  • Menstrual Absence: 31.26% of swimmers experienced a stopped menstrual cycle for more than 3 months.

    • Long-Term Absence: Within this group, 21.88% had a menstrual absence lasting more than 6 months.
    • Mid-Term Absence: Another 9.38% experienced an absence of menstruation for a period between 3 and 6 months.

The research also indicated that the number of years spent training was a positive predictor of more profuse bleeding.

Factors Contributing to Menstrual Irregularities in Swimmers

While the exact mechanisms aren't fully understood, several factors are believed to contribute to menstrual irregularities in swimmers:

  • Intense Physical Activity: High levels of exercise can affect hormone production, potentially leading to changes in the menstrual cycle.
