How to Add Air to a Tire at a Gas Station?

Published in Tire Inflation 2 mins read

Adding air to a tire at a gas station is generally straightforward. Here's how:

  1. Locate the Air Compressor: Find the air compressor, usually located near the gas pumps.

  2. Prepare for Payment: Many gas stations require payment to use the air compressor. You might need to insert coins or tokens to activate the air machine (as per provided reference). Ensure you have the necessary payment method ready.

  3. Remove Valve Stem Cap: Locate the valve stem on your tire and remove the cap. Keep the cap in a safe place.

  4. Attach the Air Hose:

    • Attach the air compressor tire inflator hose to the tire's valve stem, ensuring a secure connection.
    • You should hear air hissing if the connection isn’t tight. Readjust until the hissing stops.
  5. Inflate in Bursts: Add air in short bursts, intermittently checking the tire pressure with your tire gauge. This prevents over-inflation.

  6. Check Tire Pressure: Use a tire pressure gauge to check the current pressure. Compare this reading to the recommended tire pressure listed on the sticker inside your driver's side door or in your vehicle's owner's manual.

  7. Adjust as Needed:

    • If the pressure is too low, continue adding air in short bursts and rechecking.
    • If the pressure is too high, depress the pin in the center of the valve stem to release air, then recheck the pressure.
  8. Replace Valve Stem Cap: Once the tire pressure is correct, remove the air hose and replace the valve stem cap.

  9. Repeat for Other Tires: Repeat the process for any other tires that need inflation.
