The fine for speeding in Uganda has been significantly increased to Shs2,000,000 (two million Ugandan Shillings).
This substantial increase in the penalty for motorists driving beyond the prescribed speed limit was enacted through the Traffic and Road Safety Amendment Bill 2023. The bill was signed into law by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, elevating the fine from the previous Shs200,000.
According to the government, this stringent measure is intended to restore sanity on Uganda's roads and curb the high incidence of road carnage. The aim is to deter reckless driving behavior and enhance road safety for all users.
