The first Black basketball player at the University of North Carolina was Charlie Scott.
Scott made a significant mark on the university's athletic history when he joined the men's basketball team in 1966. He was recruited by renowned coach Dean Smith and notably became the first Black scholarship athlete at North Carolina.
During his tenure with the Tar Heels, Charlie Scott quickly established himself as an instant star for the varsity squad. His exceptional talent and leadership were pivotal in guiding the program to two Final Four appearances, leaving a lasting legacy and opening doors for future Black athletes at the University of North Carolina.
