Why is my urine so yellow?

Published in Urine Color 1 min read

Your urine's yellow color is due to a pigment called urochrome, or urobilin, which your kidneys filter out from your bloodstream. The more fluids you drink, the lighter the color of the pigment in your urine. The less you drink, the stronger the color.

However, urine can also turn a bright yellow color if you're taking certain vitamin B supplements, especially vitamin B2 (riboflavin). If your urine is bright yellow, it's likely just a sign that you're well-hydrated or taking vitamins.

Other factors that can affect your urine color:

  • Dehydration: Dark yellow or amber urine is a sign of dehydration.
  • Certain foods: Beets, blackberries, and rhubarb can temporarily turn your urine red or pink.
  • Medications: Some medications can change the color of your urine.
  • Medical conditions: Some medical conditions, like liver disease or urinary tract infections, can also change the color of your urine.

If you are concerned about the color of your urine, it's always best to consult with a doctor.
