What President Had a Peg Leg?

Published in US Presidents 1 min read

No U.S. President has ever had a peg leg.

While no American President was known to have a peg leg, a notable figure in early American history, Gouverneur Morris, did use an artificial leg. Morris, a key Founding Father and a signatory to the United States Constitution, lost his leg in a carriage accident in 1780, leading to the use of a wooden prosthetic.

He held various important roles throughout his distinguished career. For instance, he served as the Minister Plenipotentiary to France, an influential diplomatic position to which he was appointed by President George Washington. In this significant diplomatic role, Morris succeeded William Short and was later followed by James Monroe. Despite his extensive contributions to the nascent nation and his distinctive artificial leg, Gouverneur Morris was never a President of the United States.
