The chickenpox vaccine is also known as the varicella vaccine. There are two main types licensed for use in the United States:
1. Varivax®
- This is a single-antigen varicella vaccine, meaning it only protects against chickenpox.
2. ProQuad®
- This is a combination vaccine, also called MMRV, protecting against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox).
The varicella vaccine protects against chickenpox (varicella), a highly contagious childhood viral illness. Both vaccines contain a live, attenuated (weakened) varicella-zoster virus. The choice between Varivax® and ProQuad® depends on individual needs and vaccination history. Univalent varicella vaccines, like Varivax®, are also recommended in other countries like Canada for routine immunization of children. In short, while several names exist, varicella vaccine is the most encompassing and medically accurate term.
