What is Camber on a Car?

Published in Vehicle Alignment Angle 1 min read

Camber describes the inward or outward tilt of a car's wheels when viewed from the front or rear.

Understanding Car Camber

Camber is a fundamental aspect of a vehicle's wheel alignment. It describes how far the wheels/tires lean away from a perfect upright position. When looking at a car head-on, either from the front or the rear, you can easily observe the camber angle.

Types of Camber

Camber is typically discussed in terms of being negative or positive:

  • Negative Camber: This occurs when the top of the wheel tilts inward, towards the center of the car. According to the reference, when the top of the wheel tilts inward, that's negative camber.
  • Positive Camber: This occurs when the top of the wheel tilts outward, away from the center of the car.

Zero camber means the wheel is perfectly vertical relative to the road surface.

Understanding camber is important for vehicle handling, tire wear, and overall performance. Adjustments to camber are a common part of setting up a car for specific driving conditions or optimizing tire contact with the road during cornering.
