What is PTV disease?

Published in Veterinary Medicine 1 min read

PTV disease refers to a central nervous system (CNS) disease called teschovirus encephalomyelitis, which can be caused by certain strains of porcine teschoviruses (PTV) in swine. While many PTV infections in pigs are asymptomatic, some strains can lead to this neurological condition.

In essence:

  • PTV: Porcine Teschovirus
  • PTV Disease: Teschovirus Encephalomyelitis, a neurological disease caused by some strains of PTV.

The disease primarily impacts the central nervous system. It is important to remember that not all porcine teschoviruses cause disease. Many strains circulate without causing any clinical signs. However, when certain strains do cause disease, it manifests as encephalomyelitis.
