How to Remove Black Background from Video in After Effects?

Published in Video Editing 3 mins read

Removing a black background from video in After Effects can be efficiently achieved using the Luma Key effect. This technique is particularly effective when the black background is a solid color and contrasts well with the foreground elements, allowing you to isolate your subject and achieve transparency.

Step-by-Step Guide to Removing Black Background with Luma Key

The Luma Key effect works by making specific luminance (brightness) values transparent. Since black has a luminance value of zero (or very low), it's ideal for this method.

Here's how to apply the Luma Key effect:

  1. Select Your Video Layer: In your After Effects composition, locate the video layer from which you want to remove the black background. Click on this layer in the Timeline panel to select it.
  2. Access Effects & Presets Panel: Navigate to the Effects & Presets panel. If you don't see it, you can open it by going to Window > Effects & Presets in the top menu bar.
  3. Search for Luma Key: In the search bar within the Effects & Presets panel, type "luma. Key" (as mentioned in the reference) or simply "Luma Key".
  4. Apply the Luma Key Effect:
    • Drag and drop the Luma Key effect from the Effects & Presets panel directly onto your selected video layer in the Timeline.
    • Alternatively, with the layer selected, double-click on the Luma Key effect in the Effects & Presets panel.
  5. Adjust Luma Key Properties (if necessary):
    • Once applied, the Luma Key effect will appear in the Effect Controls panel for your selected layer.
    • You might see options like "Key Out Brighter" or "Key Out Darker." For a black background, ensure "Key Out Darker" is selected.
    • Adjust the "Threshold" and "Tolerance" sliders if the initial result isn't perfect.
      • Threshold: Controls the luminance level at which pixels become transparent.
      • Tolerance: Defines how wide the range of luminance values around the threshold will be keyed out.
      • Softness: Can be used to feather the edges of the keyed-out area, creating a smoother transition.
  6. Enable Transparency Grid: To visually confirm that the black background has been removed and replaced with transparency, enable the Transparency Grid. You can do this by clicking the "Toggle Transparency Grid" button, which looks like a checkered square, located at the bottom of the Composition panel. If the black background is successfully removed, you will see this checkered pattern where the black background used to be.

By following these steps, you can effectively remove a black background from your video footage in After Effects, allowing you to composite your keyed-out footage over other backgrounds or elements.
