How do you apply old wallpaper?

Published in Wallpaper Installation 3 mins read

Applying old wallpaper, especially vintage paper wallpaper, requires a gentler approach than modern vinyl options. Since it's often paper-based, typical modern pastes can damage it. Here's how to do it:

1. Preparation is Key

  • Inspect the Wallpaper: Carefully examine the old wallpaper for any tears, creases, or damage. Address these issues before applying.
  • Clean the Wall: Ensure the wall surface is clean, dry, and smooth. Remove any old wallpaper, dirt, or imperfections. Repair any holes or cracks.
  • Size the Wall (Optional): Applying a wallpaper sizing product to the wall can improve adhesion and prevent the wallpaper from absorbing too much paste too quickly. Follow the product instructions.

2. Mixing the Paste: Wheat Paste is Your Friend

  • Why Wheat Paste?: Unlike modern adhesives, wheat paste is specifically designed for paper-based wallpapers. It's less likely to damage the delicate fibers of vintage wallpaper.
  • Mixing Instructions: Follow the instructions on your wheat paste packaging carefully. Typically, you'll mix the paste with water to achieve the desired consistency. It should be smooth and lump-free.

3. Applying the Paste and Soaking the Paper

  • Apply Paste Evenly: Use a wide, soft brush to apply a generous, even layer of wheat paste to the back of the wallpaper. Ensure you cover every area, especially the edges.
  • Book the Wallpaper: Fold the pasted wallpaper, paste-side-in, allowing the pasted sides to touch. This is called "booking." This allows the paste to activate and the paper to relax. Consult the paste instructions for the recommended booking time (usually a few minutes). Don't over-soak, as it can weaken the paper.

4. Hanging the Wallpaper

  • Unfold and Align: Carefully unfold the top half of the booked wallpaper and align it with the top of your marked area on the wall.
  • Smooth and Secure: Use a wallpaper smoothing brush or a plastic smoother to gently smooth the wallpaper onto the wall, working from the center outwards. Be careful not to stretch or tear the paper.
  • Work Out Air Bubbles: Ensure there are no air bubbles trapped underneath the wallpaper.
  • Repeat: Unfold the bottom half of the wallpaper and repeat the smoothing process.
  • Trim Excess: Use a sharp utility knife or razor blade and a straight edge to trim any excess wallpaper at the top and bottom.

5. Final Touches

  • Clean Excess Paste: Wipe away any excess paste from the seams and the surface of the wallpaper with a damp sponge.
  • Allow to Dry: Let the wallpaper dry completely according to the paste manufacturer's instructions. Avoid excessive heat or drafts during the drying process.

Important Considerations:

  • Test a Small Area: Before applying paste to the entire roll, test the paste on a small, inconspicuous area of the wallpaper to ensure it doesn't cause any damage or discoloration.
  • Handle with Care: Vintage wallpaper is often fragile, so handle it with extreme care throughout the entire process.

By using wheat paste and taking extra precautions, you can successfully apply old wallpaper and preserve its beauty.
