To measure a fixed window for replacement, you focus on getting accurate dimensions of the opening itself.
When preparing to replace a fixed window, obtaining precise measurements of the existing window opening is crucial for ordering the correct size window. The key is to measure the opening between the structural elements, not the decorative trim.
To measure the width of your fixed window opening:
- Locate the Jambs: These are the vertical sides of the window frame opening.
- Measure Between the Jambs: Take your measurement from the surface of one jamb directly across to the surface of the opposite jamb.
- Measure at Three Points: Repeat this measurement process at three different vertical locations within the opening:
- At the top of the opening.
- At the middle of the opening.
- At the bottom of the opening.
- Use the Smallest Measurement: Out of the three measurements taken (top, middle, bottom), the smallest value is the one you should use when ordering your window. This ensures the new window will fit into the narrowest part of the opening.
Important: When measuring, make sure you are measuring directly from the bare jamb surfaces. Do not include any trim strips or old parting beads that might be present in the opening from the previous window installation.
This method focuses on finding the minimum width available in the opening, guaranteeing that the new window will fit without requiring significant structural modification. While this covers the width, typically you would also measure the height using a similar process (measuring at multiple points vertically and using the smallest value) to get the full dimensions for ordering.
